Raised stencils are beautiful and easy to create with our free stencil paste recipe
The supplies that you need to make your own stencil paste are:
Joint compound (sheetrock mudd)
Gesso (artist primer)
Plastic scraper
Medium size plastic bowl with lid
Sturdy mixing spoon
Acrylic paint in your choice of color
Stencil paste recipe
1 cup of sheet rock compound (sheetrock mud). This comes in various size containers
2 tbsps of Gesso (artist primer) or white acrylic paint
1 tbsp Elmer's glue
Mix together until you have the consistency of frosting
To add color to your paste
Mix in small amounts of acrylic paint until you have the shade that you want
If this gets too runny add more sheetrock mud until your stencil paste gets as thick as frosting
Mix up enough paste in case you need to correct a mistakes or want to make more stencils.
1. Take 1 cup of sheetrock paste (aka joint compound or sheetrock mud).
2. Stir in 3 tablespoons of gesso artistic primer. This will add moisture to the paste and make it easier to mix.
3. Mix this together until your stencil paste has the consistency of frosting. Your now ready to stencil.
Your stencil paste will last for months if you keep it from drying out. Store it in a covered container, place a plastic bag over the paste then cover with a lid.
Now add some color to your stencil paste
You can either paint your raised stencil after its dry or add color your stencil paste as your mixing it up. The advantage to coloring the paste is that you don't have to paint the stencil once its dry.
1. A plastic lid works well for mixing up a small amount of stencil paste.
2. To color your stencil paste simply mix in the acrylic color paint of your choice. Mix in small amounts at a time until you have the shade that you want.
3. Its a good idea to mix up extra paste in case you have to cover up a mistake or you want to create another raised stencil.
