Learning how to stencil with a sea sponge will add variety to your stenciling projects. Sea sponges are inexpensive and very easy to use. They also soak up and hold the paint allowing you to add dimension and shading to your stenciling projects.

The supplies that you need are:

Mylar stencil of your choice
2 different colors of acrylic paint
Painters tape
Paper plate
Brayer
Paper towels
Stencil adhesive Natural sea sponges

Learning how to stencil with a natural sea sponge will add interest and variety to your stenciling projects.
Tear your sea sponge into smaller sections until you have the size that is easily to handle.
Acyrlic paint works very well for stenciling becasue it cleans up easily with soap and water.
1. Spray your stencil with adhesive, tape to the wall and smooth with a brayer. 2. Most sea sponges are quite large. If your working in a small area tear your sponge in half or fourths until you have a managable size. 3. Lay your stenciling supplies out on a paper plate. I like to use acrylic paint because it cleans up easily with soap and water.
It doesn't take much paint to stencil. Sponge stencil with a damp sponge and a minimal amount of paint.
Your sponge should be damp with very little paint.
Randomly blot your sea sponge onto your stencil. Don't stay in one spot. You want to leave open areas for your next color.
4. Pour quarter size blobs of paint onto the paper plate. Wet your sponge with a paper towel until it's barely damp. Dip your sponge into your paint.
5. Blot your sponge back onto a paper towel until its almost dry.
6. Starting with one color paint, randomly blot your sponge on your stencil. Make sure to leave open spaces for your next color.
Use a small section of sea sponge to lightly blot your sponge.
Use a hair dryer to speed up the drying time of your stencil.
Use our custom made decorative lettering stencils to create your own personalized stencils.
7. Reload your sponge with your next color and continue sponging your stencil, filling in all of the open space. Using two shades of the same color will blend and compliment each other. 8.To speed up the drying time use a handheld hair dryer. Carefully remove your painters tape first. Now, slowly pull your mylar stencil away from your finished stencil. 9. Finished stencil painted with a sea sponge. Notice how using 2 shades of the same color creates a marbled look.
