How to create a raised stencil

Raised stencils (also known as 3-D or Dimensional stencils) will add interest to your stenciling and craft projects. They're created by pushing a pre-mixed paste through a heavy grade stencil. Once the stencil is dry you can paint it with acrylics, stencil creme or even glitter.

Spray your stencil with stencil adhesive then smooth with a brayer roller. Using a 1" putty knife lightly push the stencil paste on to the stencil. Use a 3" putty knife to smooth the stencil paste. Remove the tape at the bottom and sides of stencil, leaving onyly tape at the top. Carefully remove the stencil while the paste is wet.
It will take about 24 hours for the stencil to dry. If you happen to make a mistake you can scrap off the wet stencil paste and start over. When the stencil is dry it can be painted. Use a long bristle paint brush to reach all of the crevices. Use paint, glaze or stain to color your stencil. If you want your stencil to have a smoother finish you can lightly sand down the surface with fine grit sand paper before you paint.
